Peer mentoring.

Peer mentoring is my favorite. I have benefited from all the great applicable advice that I have received through peer mentoring.

To define it, peer mentoring is getting input and advice from someone who is within a few levels and years of experience as you.

I absolutely think having a senior-level mentor at your company is important, but peer mentoring is too undervalued.

Here’s what you can get from a senior-level mentor:

  • More strategic and bigger picture discussions.

  • Directional input based on what they have witnessed as a leader in the organization.

  • Having someone who may say my name in rooms with other leaders.

  • Help with typical career-related topics.

Here’s what you can get from a peer mentor:

  • More tactical and tangible advice and support.

  • Insights into working for various leaders or experiences with certain functions.

  • Getting connected to other great people at my level to build my network.

  • Help with more sensitive topics.

While all mentoring is (usually) beneficial, I can’t stress the importance of peer mentoring and how important it’s been in my life!
