Peer mentoring.
Peer mentoring is my favorite. I have benefited from all the great applicable advice that I have received through peer mentoring.
To define it, peer mentoring is getting input and advice from someone who is within a few levels and years of experience as you.
I absolutely think having a senior-level mentor at your company is important, but peer mentoring is too undervalued.
Here’s what you can get from a senior-level mentor:
More strategic and bigger picture discussions.
Directional input based on what they have witnessed as a leader in the organization.
Having someone who may say my name in rooms with other leaders.
Help with typical career-related topics.
Here’s what you can get from a peer mentor:
More tactical and tangible advice and support.
Insights into working for various leaders or experiences with certain functions.
Getting connected to other great people at my level to build my network.
Help with more sensitive topics.
While all mentoring is (usually) beneficial, I can’t stress the importance of peer mentoring and how important it’s been in my life!
