Tell, don’t ask.
Do you ask permission for too much? Instead of asking, start telling. Change the language to make a statement versus asking permission.
Examples of how to tell and not ask:
Joining an initiative you are interested in:
Tell: I am going to join the Diversity Equity & Inclusion team in the office so that I can use my leadership skills on a topic I am passionate about. This will take an average of 2 hours per month of my time.
Ask: Would it be OK if I joined the Diversity Equity & Inclusion team?
Needing to rearrange your schedule:
Tell: I have an appointment outside of the office from 12-2 PM on Wednesday. I have no meetings and will flex for my missed time by starting early on Thursday and Friday
Ask: Can I leave for an appointment and then flex that time later?
My favorite words to live by: Don't ask a question you don't want the answer to.
