Delegation.

Delegation is an important leadership skill. How are you at delegation? I think of delegation like I think of making a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. More on that later.

First, what tasks should you be delegating at work? Here’s my graph to help you understand this:

The key to enabling proper and easy delegation?

Map your process steps

Map all of the major steps within a process that need to be done so that others are aware and understand.

Think of this as writing down all the steps of making a peanut butter and jelly sandwich.

Write standard work

In addition to the process map, standard work will make sure you have all the necessary components to getting the process done right the first time.

Think of this as making sure you have the ingredients, the people, the instructions, and the tools needed to make the peanut butter and jelly sandwich.

Create a RACI

For the steps in your process and elements in your standard work, write down who is Responsible, Accountable, Consulted, and Informed of various tasks.

This will make sure to name a person (and use titles in case of role changes) who will do each step needed to make the peanut butter and jelly sandwich.

So, delegation is much like making a peanut butter and jelly sandwich! Well, really it’s creating steps that enable the process of making the peanut butter and jelly sandwich without you having to make it.
